Training

What is a good FTP for a beginner cyclist?

A beginner cyclist typically sees an FTP between 100 and 175 watts in absolute terms, though watts per kilogram (W/kg) is the more useful comparison. Most new riders land around 1.5 to 2.5 W/kg. A 70 kg rider at 2.0 W/kg has an FTP of 140 W, which is a reasonable early benchmark. After six months of consistent training, reaching 2.5 to 3.0 W/kg is achievable. FTP is highly trainable at the beginner level, and riders often see rapid gains in the first year. Rather than benchmarking against others, focus on your own trend over time.
